WCS PNG programme has published a major report in relation to the country’s national circumstances for implementing REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation including the promotion of activities that enhance forest carbon stocks) and for understanding the key direct and indirect factors that are driving deforestation and forest degradation in the country.
The report, which is titled “Analysis of National Circumstances in the Context of REDD+ and Identification of REDD+ Abatement Levers in Papua New Guinea” was undertaken by WCS with researchers from the Woods Hole Research Center and produced for Papua New Guinea’s UN-REDD National Programme which is overseen by the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA).
Key findings from the report include information on past and projected rates of deforestation, an assessment of the differences in deforestation rates amongst provinces, and an analysis of the direct and indirect drivers of forest loss in the country.
