The WCS New Ireland team has recruited new community facilitators (CFs) to be the bridge between its work and partner communities in the province.
Ten young and vibrant locals joined the team of six (6) existing CFs in an extensive week of information exchange and training that was carried out between the 10th- 14th November in Kavieng.
Trainer and WCS PNG’s Senior Community Engagement Specialist John Par Kagl said that the new CFs were a group that showed enthusiasm and charisma during the training.
He said they have shown their ability to learn and do their jobs diligently as CFs if working with WCS and their communities.
The one week training included effective communication skills, production of awareness materials, information exchange, translation of English into Tok Pisin and vice versa and a special visit to the Kavieng Correctional Institute Service topped it off as a practical component of the training.
“Through this training, I now understand the work of a CF. I am equipped with skills of information exchange and sharing,” said one of the long time serving female CF Esther Robert.
A new CF Brian Hombofuki said that he was not previously aware of WCS PNG’s work in New Ireland. He said he only knew about the organisation when he was accepted as a CF trainee.
“This training really helped me with public speaking. The visit to the Kavieng Correctional Service had instilled in me a new found confidence that I never thought I had. I am now confident in carrying out information exchange activities for WCS and my community,” said Mr Hombofuki.
Program Manager for the New Ireland Climate Change and Environment office Essau Kabing officially closed the training.
Mr Kabing said he looks forward to working with the new CFs to carry out information exchange on climate change and other environmental conservation activities in the province as a government partner with WCS New Ireland.
